What is an Oleocanthal?

Oleocanthal is a specific (and arguably the most important) polyphenol that is naturally found in truly extra virgin olive oil. Oleocanthal was discovered in 1993 by Dr. Gary Beauchamp when he was testing solutions of ibuprofen and found that it tasted similarly to freshly pressed EVOO. It turns out, the oleocanthal compound is highly similar to ibuprofen, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory, and has similar effects. Oleocanthal is not present in the olive fruit itself but is only created when the olives are cold-pressed. This medicinal type of oil is what attributes to low rates of both cancer and cognitive diseases in Mediterranean populations.

Why is Oleocanthal the secret ingredient?

Oleocanthal is being used medicinally in Europe for its pharmacological qualities. The risk of chronic inflammatory disease in Mediterranean populations is the lowest in the world and life expectancy amounts are the highest. (WHO World Health Statistics of 2010). Oleocanthal in EVOO is believed to be responsible for the lower incidence of chronic anti-inflammatory conditions in those who consume the Mediterranean diet.

A 2015 study by Paul Breslin shows how oleocanthal can kill cancer cells in as little as 30 minutes. Although it was always believed that extra virgin olive oil had combat cancer, it was also one of the first studies that showed how this happens. This study was published by the scientific journal, Molecular and Cellular Oncology, showing that oleocanthal creates cell rupture of cancer cells without hurting healthy cells.

Striking results were seen according to the World Olive Center for Health website which showed “decrease or stabilization of white blood cells, a specific death of cancer cells, and a fall in cancer markers in a significant number of patients. Oleocanthal’s Ability to Kill Cancer Cells:

It’s no secret that the Mediterranean diet has been associated with longevity. However, researchers are now starting to attribute heavy olive oil consumption as one of the prevailing factors at play when researching the links between the inhabitants of this region and life span…

Olive Oil seems to play a key role in the prevention of cancer. However, what exactly is the driving factor within Olive Oil that is responsible for this phenomenon? Good question. The answer is that a phenolic compound unique to olive oil, Oleocanthal, seems to be the gladiator fighting on behalf of the human body. As the research article continues, they explain,

“The anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antimicrobial, anticancer and neuroprotective activities of oleocanthal have been examined by previous studies. Of these, studies on the anticancer effects have been the most extensive. Oleocanthal was reported to suppress melanoma, breast, liver, and colon cancer cells.”

“Since oleocanthal inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes that mediate inflammation, which is associated with cancer initiation and progression, there was increasing interest in studying the anti-cancer properties of oleocanthal.”

“Additionally, the authors showed that oleocanthal inhibits proliferation and the ability to form colonies formation in soft agar of HT-29 colon cancer cells. Other reports illustrated the anti-proliferative activity of oleocanthal using various cancer cell lines–including breast carcinoma”

So, as we can see here, it is Oleocanthal in particular that is inducing the death of cancer cells and working to prevent the precursors of cancer to thrive. So not only does Oleocanthal have a profound impact on cancer cells, but it also exhibits neuroprotective capabilities that ultimately prevent and help halt the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
